The Hamer Lions Club is pleased to announce they have chosen to honor Hamer Lion Bill Shurtliff as the 2024 Citizen of the Year.
Bill was born in Osgood, Idaho. He is the fifth child of Rene and Lella Shurtliff. He has two brothers and three sisters. His family moved to Hamer the year after he was born, and he was raised in Hamer. He attended school in Hamer and graduated from West Jefferson High School in Terreton. He has worked as a farmer, backhoe operator, truck driver, and also in construction. Bill has four children, Jason, Cher, Dan and Anthony. He also raised two stepsons, Chris and Ray. After he married Cathy, her eleven children were added to the family.
He has numerous grandchildren. The Hamer Lions Club was established 42 years ago in 1982. Bill is one of the original charter members. He has spent countless hours volunteering to serve the community in Lions Club activities and in meeting humanitarian needs. Bill and Coralle Knight started the annual Lions Club 4th of July parade and fireworks celebration in Hamer. He also brought about the idea of the annual fundraising auction, which has been a successful method to enable the Hamer Lions to better serve the community. For several years at Christmastime, Bill took the children of Hamer Christmas caroling in a horse-drawn wagon. If horses weren’t available, he would pull the wagon with his pickup. It was a fun and loved tradition.
Bill has always been community minded and service oriented. He has been the mayor of both Hamer and Mud Lake. He served as the board chairman of the Mud Lake Fair. He was a volunteer EMT for the Mud Lake Ambulance. He is an honorary member of the Verle Skidmore VFW Post in recognition for his years of service of playing taps at numerous occasions. He taught horse 4H and owned and has a great affection for Clydesdale horses. He is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and has served the church in numerous capacities. He is willing to lend a hand when there is a need and is a friend to all of us in the community. Congratulations to Bill on this well-deserved honor.
